Chic 101: Lesson 2 -- Your Daytime Makeup

Chic makeup is beautiful yet also seemingly effortless and carefree. It should make you feel pretty and confident, yet not distracted or bogged down by what is on your face, nor should you be worried about smears and smudges. To me, the epitome of chic daytime makeup is beautiful yet fresh and approachable as well. I want to enhance what I already have, instead of changing them.

Below is an example of what my daytime makeup is. While I don't necessarily keep up with this look 100% of the time, I do follow the general guideline.

Part A: Base

1) As part of my morning skincare routine, I'd apply Shiseido Refining Makeup Primer SPF 21 all over my face. A review for this product is here.

2) On my neck, I'd apply Avon Anew Rejuvenate Revitalizing Cream SPF 25. For an explanation on why I wear two different products on my face and neck, along with a review, please click here.

3) Afterward, I apply what I believe is the most amazing foundation in the world: Shiseido Sheer and Perfect Foundation SPF 18. This foundation is very lightweight and watery in texture, yet it blends and dries quickly into an even, matte finish. The best part is, it doesn't just work as a foundation; it also evens out your skin tone, and you can't even feel it on. Sheer and Perfect is comparable to Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua; the difference is that Shiseido's foundation doesn't oxidize on your skin (turn orange on it) and has a more superior lasting power. For reference, my MAC foundation shade is NC20, which places me in the light-golden skin tone category, and my perfect match for this foundation is "O 20 -- Natural Light Ochre."

4) To finish of my base makeup, I'd then apply Chanel Poudre Universelle Compacte pressed powder all over my face with a large, soft synthetic bristled brush. This excellent powder seals my foundation and keeps my skin matte for hours, without looking powdery. My shade for this is "Translucent 1."

Part B: Color

5) I begin my color makeup routine with Clinique "Berry Delight" blush. Despite its name, Berry Delight is actually a flushed beige-pink with a hint of berry. It applies very sheer and natural, and while there is some shimmer in the product, the finish is more satin-like and beautiful on the cheeks, instead of glittery.

6) On my lips, a coat of Lancome's "Roses in Love" lipstick, from the Rouges in Love collection, is then applied. This is a very beautiful sheer neutral rose color, with a satin finish. I also love the retro-inspired, bullet packaging for the lipsticks in this collection.

7) When I don't want to wear the Lancome lipstick, I'd wear Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in "Blushing Mauve." This is another beautiful neutral and appears as pink-nude once applied. A lot of times, I'd also apply Blushing Mauve right on top of Roses in Love as well.

8) Don't be alarmed by the vibrant pink! Shiseido "Pink Sands" eyeshadow trio has an elegant, sheer finish. The very sheer pink is here to enhance the other two shades, not compete with them. For a daily, neutral eyes look, this is my go-to palette.

9) Once my look is pulled together, I apply Guerlain Terracotta Light in "Blondes 02" bronzer for a sheer wash of color. While I am a light-skinned brunette, I prefer the Blondes 02 shade because it pulls neither brown nor orange. Instead, it is an extremely sheer natural shade that doesn't really work as a bronzer, but to add some warmth to your skin. I gently run a very subtle and light layer of this product all over my face. It doesn't change my skin color at all, but it adds life to it. There are days when I don't even bother with blush, especially when I'm in a rush.

10) For daytime, I need only one coat of mascara. For this, I turn to what has been my favorite mascara since it was first released in 2010 -- Maybelline The Falsies mascara, in "Blackest Black."
