Chic 101 -- Lesson 3: Your Nighttime Makeup

Here's an interesting lesson I learned regarding how to make red lipstick work: Do your eye makeup last. Typically for many of us, lip makeup is done after our eye makeup, but the opposite is true for red lipstick. This is to prevent the "overdone" look since red lipstick is already so dramatic that you do not want it to compete with your eye makeup. So, basically, do your base makeup, follow by red lipstick, and then do your eye makeup. By this point, you would know where and when to stop with the eyes.

Note: My base makeup for nighttime is the same as the one for day, as mentioned here.

For my nighttime color makeup, I love the elegant look of dramatic lips, subtle cheeks and eyes (just enough to look alluring, but not to distract from my lips). Thus, my makeup would be as follow:

1) I don't really bother to wear blushes with my red lipsticks, but I don't want my face to look "flat" either, so a very sheer wash of Guerlain Terracotta Light in "Blondes 02" would be applied to my face. You don't really see the bronzer once it's on the skin, but a healthier, more dimensional face.

2) A coat of either Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet in "La Fascinante" or Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in "Cherries in the Snow" would then follow. La Fascinante is a deep, true red, while Cherries in the Snow is more berry-based. As you can see, while they are in two different red families, the two lipsticks are versatile enough to complement a range of skin tones.

3) For my eyes, I'd then apply Lancome's "Garnet Sensation" to the creases of my eyelids. As you can see, despite looking very dramatic in the compact, it is more of a subtle plum-taupe once applied to the skin. Unfortunately, Garnet Sensation has been discontinued, but a good alternative is Chanel "Fauve" eye shadow.

4) To top everything off, two to three coats of my favorite mascara -- Maybelline The Falsies in "Blackest Black" is applied to my lashes! Bonus tip: To apply multiple coats of mascara, do not let dry between coats. Reapply while the previous coat is still wet.

What is your favorite nighttime makeup look?
