Get Fit With Me! Week 8: Let's Talk About Choosing Shapewear

I meant to post this earlier, but my schedule has been insane, due to the holiday season!

Anyhow, as I stated back in early October, I was embarking on an 8-week-long weight loss and fitness journey. By Week 6, I decided that, given the holiday season, it was more realistic for me to try to maintain the weight I was at, and keep myself from re-gaining the weight that I had lost. Well, I am happy to say that I am still at exactly where I was at, and have successfully keep off the lost weight. Thus, while I have not lost any more weight, I have not gained any either.

I still take my OptiNutrients supplement daily, take walks with my children (although I am going back to the gym on a near-daily basis this week!), and be mindful of what I eat each meal. As a result, my energy level is still up, and I feel great! To know more about the supplement, please go to WEEK 1.

Okay, now, let's talk about shapewear! When you are in the process of losing weight and are in-between sizes, you may feel that the clothes that are already in the closet may look a bit awkward on you. What you need is good shapewear.

First, I will address what shapewear is, and what it is not, before I start reviewing the shapewears that I have in my closet.

What shapewear does:
  • It smooths out any lumps or bumps that you may have, creating a sleek effect when you wear clothes, especially more form-fitting ones.
  • It holds everything in place. No jiggly flesh!
What shapewear does not do:
  • Makes you thinner. If your shapewear squeezes everything in, where is the excess skin/flesh going to go? Trust me, you want the sleek effect, not sausage casing! However, because your shapewear smooths out your body, it will create a slimmer effect.
  • Changes your natural body shape.
How to choose the right shapewear: your shapewear should be snug enough to hold everything in, but not so tight that you would have trouble breathing. However, if your shapewear does not fit snuggly enough, there will not be a smoothing effect.

So, which ones are right for you? Below are my reviews of the shapewears that I purchased from Hanes. Overall, I find their shapewear to be very effective, yet at such affordable prices! I don't have anything else to compare these to, because Hanes is all that I've ever worn.

Okay, on to the reviews!

1) Hanes Women's Firm Control Seamless Boxer: $13

PROS:
  • Smooths out your thighs, butt, and guts!
  • Can be worn under jeans.
  • Can be worn under tight dresses for a smooth, seamless finish.
CONS:
  • Can give you the muffin top, but you can avoid this by pairing it with the Seamless Torset Top (see #2)!
  • Can give create the illusion of back fat (back lumps).
  • If too snug, the hem can dig into your thighs.
  • If not snug enough, the hem can roll upward.

2) Hanes Seamless Torset Top: $15

PROS:
  • Can be worn with your own bra.
  • Smooths out your back, including the bra band, preventing the "back fat" appearance!
  • Provides a 360-degree smoothing effect.
  • Emphasizes your natural waist.
  • Smooths out your lower abdomen, so that you won't have the "lower belly pooch."
  • Smooths out the "muffin top" created by your underwear.
CONS:
  • None that I can think of.

3) Hanes Shaping Torset Slip: $19

PROS:
  • All-over coverage means an evenly smooth and sleek appearance.
  • No "muffin top"!
  • Has all of the combined benefits of items 1 and 2.
CONS:
  • Can't be worn with pants.
  • The skirt portion can roll up if too tight or not snug enough.

This concludes my 8-week series on fitness for this blog. However, I am committed to making eating healthy and exercising a part of my daily life, and taking my OptiNutrients supplement daily. Thus, even though this is the conclusion of the series, it is not the end.

As mentioned earlier, I have been working to maintain my current weight from Week 4, so the goal is not to lose weight, but instead not to gain additional weight. Once the holidays are over and life slows down a bit, I will continue to lose weight until I reach my goal.

  1. This was such a great series, I will be reflecting back on these posts in the new year to help me stay on track with my fitness goals. I love shape wear, for me it is all about the proper under garments as they make a big difference in how you look in clothes.I never leave home without a pair of Spanx.

  12. Perfect for when you are rocking that fitted top, I layer these in the winter seasons, but these shaper tanks and camisoles smooth out bra lines and can nip the waist and sometimes control the tummy, from what I have tested out! Sometimes, these tanks have bra cutouts, allowing for you to rock your own bras and these camis can at times provide an extra lift to the girls!
